Last Friday marked the end of our Work Placement week with Logan from Studio West School in Newcastle. Your Print Specialists became a ‘learning partner’ at Studio West, a school with project based learning at its core, in 2015. Alongside academic subjects, the school offers students the opportunity to learn practical skills through on the job training; something which YPS is passionate about.
The partnership between YPS and Studio West began when the school enquired about a Mimaki printer. YPS were only to happy to advise and assist the school in choosing the right equipment for their students.
Managing Director Garry Brown had already built up connections with various schools and colleges through open days but was looking for the opportunity to work alongside a school on a more permanent basis.
“Studio West made an enquiry about the Mimaki and I found out a bit more about the school and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
“We’ve got a vast amount of knowledge within our team at YPS and we felt it would be worthwhile to work with a local educational institution and pass some of this on to young people to try to do our bit to preserve the future of print.”
Using Logan’s interests in game design as a starting point, we developed a range of projects based on a typical week at YPS. This allowed Logan to cover all aspects of YPS from hardware to software to traditional screen printing and media.
Logan now has experience in using the Mimaki UJF-3042fx with Rasterlink5 software to print a range of promotional items, such as iPhone covers, coasters and pens using his own designs. He has even lent a hand printing and packing customer orders.
Throughout the week Logan has gained knowledge about the products that YPS offers as well as the various services we provide our customers, from training, service and consumables sales.
We really hope that Logan enjoyed his week with us and we look forward to our next placement opportunity with Studio West School!
